As per a study conducted by Rutgers Health experts using more than 31 million records, infertility treatment patients were more likely to be hospitalized with heart diseases in the year following delivery as compared to normally conceived cases. Infertility patients were more likely to be hospitalized for hypertension than spontaneously conceived patients.

Rei Yamada, an obstetrics and gynecology resident at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the lead author of the study said, “Postpartum checkups are necessary for all patients, but this study indicates they are particularly important for patients who undergo infertility treatment to achieve a conception.”

The researchers used data from more than 31 million patients who were discharged after their delivery from 2010 to 2018. It also included 287,813 patients who had undergone any infertility treatment. 550 out of 100,000 women who received infertility treatment and 355 out of 100,000 women who conceived naturally were hospitalized due to some cardiovascular disease in the year after delivery.

The reason of the elevated risk of heart disease associated with infertility treatments remains unclear. The increase in heart disease could be from the infertility treatments, the underlying medical issue that caused the infertility or some other cause.
