P.V. Sindhu Leads India At Malaysia Masters

Two-time Olympic medalist, P.V Sindhu will lead India’s team in the Malaysia Masters tournament, starting from Tuesday. Having skipped the Uber Cup and Thailand Open, she is now focusing on the women’s singles draw of BWF World Tour Super 500 event.

Sindhu has faced difficulty to regain her pear after a knee surgery that happened in October last year. The 28-year-old has previously won this tournament in 2013 and 2016. Ranked fifth in the women’s singles, she will be competing against, Kristy Gilmour of Scotland, ranked 22nd , on Wednesday.

This will be Sindhu’s ninth tournament of the year since her return from injury at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in February. Other junior players who will be joining Sindhu in the women’s singles draw are Ashmita Chaliha, Aakarshi Kashyap and Unnati Hooda.

Sindhu’s most recent title was at the Singapore Opening 2022. In the men’s singles, the winner of the last year’s Malaysia Masters, HS Prannoy, will not be participating this year. Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth have withdrawn too. In their absence, Kiran George, the 36th ranked player in the world, will be leading the Indian men’s singles team.

Additionally, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the men’s doubles BWF world rankings top two players, who recently won the Thailand Open 2024, will also be absent from this competition.
