Patanjali Fined For Selling Substandard Food Products

The Chief Judicial Magistrate in Pithoragarh fined and sentenced to six months of prison, three individuals of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. Patanjali’s food product failed a quality test at a testing laboratory in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand. In 2019, a food safety inspector voiced concerns about Patanjali Navratna Elaichi Soan Papdi at Lila Dhar Pathak’s shop at the main market in Berinag, Pithoragarh.

Samples were gathered and notifications were sent to Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. in Haridwar and Ramnagar. The Rudrapur testing laboratory sent a notice to the state food safety agency in December 2020 on the inadequate quality of the sweet. Following the incident, lawsuits were also brought against Patanjali assistant manager Abhishek Kumar, distributor Ajay Joshi, and businessman Lila Dhar Pathak. In addition, the three individuals received prison sentences of six months each and fines of ₹5,000, ₹10,000, and ₹25,000, respectively.

Patanjali Ayurved Ltd was recently asked by the Supreme Court, why the 14 items for which the Uttarakhand State Licensing Authority had suspended the company’s manufacturing licenses were still being sold. Patanjali’s senior attorney, Balbir Singh, informed the Supreme Court that the company had ceased selling these goods.

It was mentioned that the attorneys representing Patanjali Ayurved Ltd., Balkrishna, and Ramdev asked for more time to submit affidavits detailing the actions to remove the advertisements for goods whose licenses had been revoked. “It is requested that the aforementioned affidavit be filed in three weeks.
