Cyclone Remal Hits Bengal, Bangladesh: Evacuations And Alerts Issued

A “red alert” has been issued for extreme rainfall in 7 districts and ‘orange alert” in 11 districts, as per  the official release.

Cyclone Remal starts its land fall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh around 9.15 pm on Sunday, May 26. The India Meteorological Department -IMD warns of extreme rainfall in the Coastal areas of West Bengal and in North Odisha for two consecutive days of May 26, May 27. Also, heavy rainfall would hit the parts of Assam and Meghalaya. Heavy to very heavy rain to hit the Northeastern States of Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura on Monday and Tuesday, May 27 and May 28 respectively.

NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) is deployed in action. NDRF personnel’s clears road after a tree fell near Sagar Bypass Road due to high intensity wind.

On Sunday, May 26 around 1 lakh people were evacuated from the coastal areas, as a precautionary measure said the official. 16 battalions each from State disaster management and NDRF have been deployed in the coastal areas, said the official. The official informs PTI, “Evacuation efforts have concentrated on relocating 1.10 lakh people from the coastal regions to safe shelters, with a significant number hailing from South 24 Parganas district, notably Saggar Island, Sunderbans, and Kakdwip”. Tarins in West Bengal are tied to the railway tracks at Shalimar Railway station.

According to IMD “a maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph”. An IMD bulletin said on May 26 said “The outer cloud band lies over coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal. The landfall process will commence in next few hours”.

The Kolkata Airport has suspended its flight operation for 21 hours from Sunday noon keeping in mind the effects of the cyclone ‘Remal’, said an official. Airports Authority of India (AAI) spokesperson said PTI (Press Trust of India) said, a total of 394 flights, including domestic and international flights would not operate, during the flight suspension period.

NDRF officials asks East Medinipur locals to vacate the low lying areas.

Moreover a solid precautions has been taken by State government and Central government to face “Remal”.
