Severe Cyclone Remal Hits, Over 1 Lakh Evacuated In Bengal

The Met Office stated, over one lakh people have been moved to cyclone shelters by the West Bengal government, as a severe cyclonic storm Remal started making a landfall on Sunday evening between Bangladesh and West Bengal coast with an intensity of 110 – 120 kmph, blowing to 135 kmph.

The Met Department added, “The landfall process of severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ commenced over the adjacent coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara close to the southwest of Mongla in the neighbouring country.”

The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airports Authority of India officials said that the airport was shut down from Sunday noon till 9am on Monday. 394 domestic and International flights were cancelled.

Local Trains in Howrah and Sealdah divisions were also cancelled.

The Kolkata Police gave two helpline numbers for its citizens – 9432610428 and 9432610429

TMC national general Abhishek Banerjee also cancelled his roadshow at Basirhat constituency in the North 24 Parganas.

Several rallies by BJP leaders were also cancelled for the safety of people.
