President Murmu Extends Independence Day Wishes To Guyana

Since the independence of Guyana in May 1966, the ties between India and Guyana have been close with a high degree of understanding.

President Droupadi Murmu has greeted Guyana counterpart Irfaan Ali and the people of Guyana on the Instance of the country’s Independence Day. Guyana had gained its independence on May 26th, 1966.

President Murmu has noted that in recent months a strong boost has been witnessed in the bilateral relations between India and Guyana and new scopes are opening up to enrich the partnership.

The Indian High Commission in Georgetown on X said, “On behalf of the government, the people of India and on my own behalf, I extend warm greetings and felicitations to your excellency and to the friendly people of Guyana on the occasion of your Independence Day. We have witnessed a strong momentum in our bilateral relations in recent months and new areas are opening up in our expanding bilateral partnership. We are thus building on our traditionally warm and cordial relations.  I take this opportunity to convey my best wishes for your good health and well-being as well as for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the friendly people of Guyana.”

Since the independence of Guyana in May 1966, the ties between India and Guyana have been close with a high degree of understanding. Both the countries see each other as strategic partners and cooperate in the international arena.

Earlier in February, welcoming the Guyana Prime Minister Mark Philips and his delegations, the President said that although being geographically distant, both the countries are connected by the virtue of our colonial past, our multi-cultural societies, traditions and languages with the sizeable Indian community that has made Guyana its home for nearly two centuries.

As per the Rashtrapati Bhavan Press Release, Murmu also noted that, India and Guyana as leading members of the Global South are strong advocates for reformed multilateralism.

The President also appreciated Guyana’s efforts in areas of Sustainable development, climate change and Green Energy.
