The Israeli army said that it had gained “operational control” over the strategic Philadelphi corridor along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. On condition of anonymity, a military official told reporters “We have established operational control” over the 14-kilometre (8.5-mile) corridor.

The capture of the Philadelphi corridor comes just weeks after Israeli forces took control of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt on May 7. The corridor had served as a buffer zone between Gaza and Egypt, and Israeli troops guarded it until 2005 when they were withdrawn as part of a broader disengagement from the Gaza Strip.
Since then, there were fears that the corridor was being used to move weapons to armed groups in the Palestinian territory. A day after Israeli tanks rolled into city centre of the city, residents and officials said, fighting raged in Gaza’s far-southern city of Rafah on Wednesday
The Gaza war was sparked by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,189 people, mostly civilians, as per an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
