Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister of Pakistan, acknowledged on Tuesday that Islamabad had “violated” a 1999 deal with India, seemingly referring to the Kargil conflict. Six years after being declared ineligible by the nation’s Supreme Court, Sharif made these statements during a meeting of the PML-N general council, which resulted in his election as the party’s president.

“On May 28, 1998, Pakistan carried out five nuclear tests. After that Vajpayee Saheb came here and made an agreement with us. But we violated that agreement…it was our fault,” said Sharif

The “Lahore Declaration,” which was signed on February 21, 1999, between Sharif and the then-prime minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was the accord that was discussed. The goal of the agreement was to establish stability and peace between the two nations. However, the Kargil War began a few months later when Pakistani forces broke into the Jammu and Kashmir area of Kargil. During the PML-N general council meeting, Sharif made a claim about having conducted nuclear testing in spite of pressure from the US and poked fun at former prime minister Imran Khan.

“President Bill Clinton had offered Pakistan USD 5 billion to stop it from carrying out nuclear tests but I refused. Had (former prime minister) Imran Khan like a person been on my seat he would have accepted Clinton’s offer,” Sharif said on a day when Pakistan marked the 26th anniversary of its first nuclear tests.

Sharif asserted that Gen. Zahirul Islam, the previous head of the ISI, had contributed to the overthrow of his administration in 2017 and the ascension of Imran Khan.

In addition, Sharif claimed that Saqib Nisar, the country’s then-chief justice, had removed him from the prime ministership in 2017 based on a fabrication.
