Mizoram Quarry Collapse Kills 17, Dozens Missing After Cyclone

Mizoram faces a huge stone quarry collapse, as an aftershock of ‘Cyclone Remal’ on Tuesday, May 28. Around 17 people found dead and atleast 12 are missing.

Mizoram faces a huge stone quarry collapse, as an aftershock of ‘Cyclone Remal’ on Tuesday, May 28. Around 17 people found dead and atleast 12 are missing, as per the State disaster management authority of Mizoram.  Around 22 people got buried beneath the huge debris. Around 150 houses gets destroyed, with numerous trees and electric poll collapsed.

At least 50 families were shifted to shelters, as their houses got drowned due to the overflowing of River Tlawang at Sairang Village, reported Aizawl’s Deputy Commissioner. CM Pu Lalduhoma takes action.

The disaster occurred between Melthum and Hlimen on the Southern outskirts of Aizawl town ,said an official. Heavy rain is affected the rescue operation. For the entire day on May 28, Aizawl (State capital of Mizoram) was disconnected from the rest of the Country. Landslides occurred in National Highway-6 at Hunthar and NH-54 at Bungbangla. The trees fell on the roads and were being cleared in the evening.

A building in Salem Veng in Aizawl got covered due to the landslide. Later the residents bodies were recovered.

Many other are missing. Aizawl faced the natural calamity – massive landfall, on Tuesday morning around 6 am. Mizoram State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA) said that at least 14 people including 2 minors got killed and 8 others are missing as the stone quarry fell down in Aizawl. MSDMA reports 1 death, from each area of Falkawn, Lungsei, Kelsih of Aizawl.

A police officer said “Among the deceased in the stone quarry collapse are a four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl”. Aizawl’s Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar reported to PTI (Press Trust of India) that search operation would carry on till the entire area gets cleared.

Mizoram Director General of Police Anil Shukla told PTI, “The abandoned stone quarry was not functional for the last three decades. Houses near the quarry collapsed”. The DGP added, “Those involved in the rescue operations are facing difficulties during the night. We are still searching for survivors”.

UPDATE : As per India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Mizoram, there would be moderate rainfall in the region on Wednesday, May 29. While, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightening would occur in the outskirts of the region. Wind speed to reach around 30kmph – 40 kmph.

Ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh had been announced by the Government of Mizoram to the  families of the victims of the stone quarry. Mizoram Government orders the offices to remain close today on Wednesday as per alert issued by IMD.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma called for an emergency meeting with Home Minister K. Sapdanga, Chief Secretary Renu Sharma and other senior officials to supervise the situation. Sapdanga hands over cheques of 2Lakh to each family who died in the landslide, saying that the remaining amount would be given too  them sooner.
