Kolkata Airport Halts Flights For 21 Hours Due To Cyclone

The cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall on May 26 at midnight in the neighboring beaches of West Bengal and Bangladesh with winds of 110–120 km/h with gusts up to 135 kmph.

In light of the potential effects of cyclone Remal, the management of the Kolkata airport have decided to halt flight operations for 21 hours starting at 2:00 PM on Sunday. During the flight suspension period, 394 domestic and international flights would not operate from the airport.

As per the department report from the Met. Strong winds above 50 to 60 knots with gusts up to 70 knots  can affect areas in Bengal .

“In view of cyclone Remal’s impact on the coastal region of West Bengal, including Kolkata, a meeting was held with the stakeholders and it has been decided to suspend flight operations from 1200 IST on May 26 to 0900 IST on May 27 due to predicted heavy winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kolkata,” NSCBI Airport Director C Pattabhi said in a statement.

The cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall on May 26 at midnight in the neighboring beaches of West Bengal and Bangladesh with winds of 110–120 km/h with gusts up to 135 kmph. The Met Office has issued a warning for very high rainfall on May 26–27 in the coastal regions of north Odisha and West Bengal. Low-lying regions of Bangladesh’s coastal West Bengal are predicted to be submerged by a storm surge as high as 1.5 meters upon landfall.

A meeting was convened by the Kolkata airport director on Friday also with all the stakeholders including AAI, Met department, air traffic control (ATC), communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) and others in view of the cyclone.
