Just hearing the name of Kedarnath gives us goosebumps, Thousands of people only dream of going to Kedarnath. But not everyone can. The trekking route starts from Gaurikund and is about 16 km long. The route goes through beautiful Himalayan landscapes, including forests, waterfalls, and rivers. The trek takes about 6-8 hours to complete, and the difficulty level is moderate. People say 16 km but the road seems to be more than 100 km. Even many people go but some people cannot go.
Kedarnath is closed for about 6 months each year due to the region’s heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions. The temple is located at an altitude of over 11,000 feet in the Himalayas, making it subject to heavy snowfall and extremely cold temperatures during the winter months. The area also experiences frequent avalanches and landslides, making it difficult and dangerous for people to visit. To ensure the safety of visitors and temple staff, the Kedarnath temple is typically closed to the public from late October or early November until April or May each year. During this time, the temple staff and local authorities maintain and clean the temple, while the local residents move to lower altitudes to escape the harsh weather conditions.
Once the snow starts to melt and the weather improves, the temple is reopened for the summer months and thousands of pilgrims and tourists flock to the temple to offer their prayers and witness its beauty and serenity. When Kedarnath is closed, the Idol is brought to the Omkareshwar temple. Omkareshwar Mandir is situated at Ukhimath at an elevation of 1311 metre ,in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand is the winter abode of Lord Kedarnath.
