The Kashmir police have installed the AI-based facial recognition system at Navyug tunnel Qazigund in Kulgam district of South Kashmir which is considered the main route of the border. Qazigund is the main entry and exit point of the Kashmir Valley.
The artificial intelligence will now be used to track the wanted terrorists in the valley. the system installed AIIMS to target the individuals involved in criminal activities including terrorists, terror supporters, members of banned organisations, drug dealers, OGWs, and more. In a conversation with Media, the IGP of Kashmir Zone VK Birdi said, ” The Kashmir Valley is connected to the Jammu region through a tunnel, and given the security situation, we need to monitor it closely. We want to track the movements of individuals involved in anti-national activities who cross the tunnel from Srinagar to Jammu and back. We have implemented this technology in the kulgam district at the tunnel. This AI-based system recognises faces when we have photographs of individuals involved in various activities, this technology helps us identify those elements. It will greatly assist in apprehending fugitives.”
The AI system is user-friendly and at the same time highly accurate. The system operates in a well-defined program. The security has the input of the data of the individuals with their criminal and terrorist backgrounds into the systems and their records including photographs, which have already been stored in the system. The system also contains the data of the missing and wanted vehicles. The system works with the two police teams, one of the police team is stationed near the tunnel and the other manages the control room. Where special cameras are installed to scan faces and match them with the stored data in the AI system. If the AI matches with the face and the kind of data input into the system the system starts beeping and the search team is allotted to trap the individual.
The security at the controlling room is fully trained to handle the technology. The system mainly targets public safety and combating crime using Technology, especially by detecting faces and criminal records. The Indian Army also uses drones with AI systems installed in them to monitor the border regions and identify threats in addition to that it helps the security personnel to have better surveillance.
Along with artificial intelligence for facial recognition language translation and robotic mind detectors have also been included. Artificial intelligence has emerged as a force multiplier in military operations.
