In light of the cyclonic storm expected, the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata will halt all cargo and container handling activities for 12 hours starting Sunday evening.

The operations will be suspended from 6 pm on Sunday till 6 am on Monday, officials said.

Cyclone Remal forced Chattogram Port, an important hub for Bangladeshi marine trade, to completely shut down. To protect the safety of ships and people, the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) issued “Alert No. 4,” the highest level, which suspended all port operations. In order to protect themselves from the powerful winds and large waves caused by the cyclone, 68 commercial vessels were relocated to the deep sea.

Rathendra Raman, the port’s chairperson, called a meeting on Saturday to discuss how to handle the potential cyclone’s effects. He placed a strong focus on proactive measures and interdepartmental cooperation during the discussion with port officials.

Railway operations in the port area will also be suspended during that time, officials said.

49 bulk vessels left the outer anchorage by Saturday night, which put an end to the unloading process. Nineteen more commercial vessels anchored at the jetty were forced into the deep sea by Sunday morning. The CPA deployed additional security guards and medical assistance in order to safeguard all cranes, cargo, and container equipment. Every inland vessel was moved into the inner harbor’s secure shelters. To evaluate and carry out post-cyclone recovery operations, a planning meeting was arranged.

Cyclone Remal caused severe interruptions at Kolkata Port as well. The movement of materials and goods was impacted by the 12-hour suspension of all cargo and container handling operations. Due to the extreme conditions of the storm, the port’s activities were briefly suspended.
